We live in an Anxiety-ridden culture.
Anxiety has become a dirty word. We live in an Anxiety-ridden culture. The general theme seems to be to praise hyper-productivity, keep everyone overstimulated, and push everyone to be highly driven toward a certain level of material success. Just that sentence makes me feel anxious. The question is is anxiety inherently bad? And if you can’t change the world around you how can you manage all the landmines in life that seem to trigger an anxiety-inducing response? Can massage help with any of this? To answer these questions we first have to break down where anxiety comes from and how it affects our bodies.
First off this is not an attempt to minimize any Anxiety Disorder. Anxiety is a physiological response to a perceived danger that prepares the body for a fight or flight response. During Tax Season I have a looming sense of dread in the pit of my stomach. I am not in any real danger but the idea of the danger of doing my taxes wrong or not having all of the correct material for my tax expert just leaves a pit of dread in my body. however, once my taxes are turned in to the accountant and done my anxiety goes away. This is a normal response to a perceived danger or threat. For many people,s this feeling can take much longer to dissipate or may not completely go away at all.
